Re: Which App to use

I would disagree with CraigRat on this one. I recall when I first started to geocache the entry cost for geocaching was $350 for a base level GPSr - there were no smartphones nor apps then. That initial $350 investment was one of the best investments I've ever made. Such high entry costs did not sto...

Re: How many people still visit the forums

I used to check daily, but have noticed the much reduced activity. I now check in much less frequently. Don't (and won't) us Facebook groups.

Re: What Have You Lost/Found?

The oddest find I've made is a really large bottle of unoped bubbly. Left it where it was, it was not worth the effort. The worst loss is my GPSr. I've left it at a few caches in the past and had 30 minute drives to back-track and get it. This time I left it (I think) in Balranald a fortnight ago - ...

Re: No cache size? No hint? What the?

I think upon the saying "it takes two to tango". A geocacher who uses destructive search techniques needs to rethink lest they contribute to harming the reputation of geocaching, but a hider that hides with intent to frustrate fellow geocachers is likewise contributing to the problem. I've seen both...

Re: Cache/puzzle spoilers

I post so little that I must bear a stricking resemblance to a troll, but anyway... I'm not fond of puzzle caches. I get some satisfaction from solving those that I do, but wouldn't get any satisfaction from just swapping coords. Sometimes I get the feeling that more than a few puzzle people are mor...

Re: Geocachers Anonymous

I think you really need Statisticians Anonymous - there's nothing wrong with geocaching.

Re: FTF acknowledgements in listings

I've never liked the practice. It does feel good to be the first but it's the act of geocaching that gives me greater pleasure. I don't mind seeing my log as the earliest on the list but I don't need to see my name in the main description. I get the feeling that it places the FTF hunt as the ultimat...

Re: Archived because of danger (or not)

I've cached next to cliffs, and even slid down a very steep slope once (very lucky I didn't injure myself). For me it's a fact of life that no matter what we do we can get injured. If we were to avoid all activities which could hurt us we wouldn't get out of bed (or get in it for that matter - how m...

Re: Where do you see geocaching in the next 10 years?

I pondered this question a few years ago when I realised the geocaching model is a growth machine. I don't think things will stay the same indefinately. As cachers become longer term they start to find all the caches in their area and require more and more to be hidden in order to keep participating...

As others have said they can be fun. Especially beating the very competitive FTF crowd in Canberra on a puzzle cache . As with other FTF sought the heart was pounding as I headed out to find a cache not found for several days. I also realised a FTF still feels good when I looked at a cache ...

The complication only occurs when cachers place a TB before they have logged their retrieving it. A few days isn't an onerous wait to ensure the logs match reality. My one experience (that I recall) in having a TB grabbed from me was actually more confusing than simply waiting. I don't usually follo...

There's something about 'grabbing' a TB from another cacher unannounced that sounds rather impolite.
I've had a TB grabbed from me within hours of my moving it which results in there being no record of my moving the TB. (Now I don't place until I've logged the retrieval). Several times I've retri...

An interesting idea. I'm too concerned about being quizzed about something non-geocaching that I find while out geocaching. As others have said this will happen.
To me the issue is about being thought suspicious while geocaching. How often does this really happen? I've seen many posts saying that...

Re: Security

It's not a question of harrassment, it's a question of security. This is an example of good security. Security should be assessing potential threats as well as preventing actions in progress. This is why bags are searched before going into an aircraft, rather than waiting for something to go off. T...

I'm not sorry to be nit-picking if that is how my post is viewed (although I'm sorry if this strays too far off topic). I think there are too many people out there that seem to think individuals are incapable of assessing risks for themselves and hence insist that others must do that for them.
Fo...
