Re: Newbie thread: Which Magellan handheld GPS to buy?
I hear the Oregons are good. Ive seen them in use but never got to use one yet myself I am still the owner of my trusty old Meridian Platinums and also a Garmin 60csx. I have been able to compare maps and which unit is better. Its a hard call now as my Magellan maps are getting old but I still find ...

I use the Meridian Platinum. They are accurate but slow to home in on the location.Once you get used to the boomerang effect they work well. They average out when stationary so you can narrow your search area to within 3m. (assuming the cache was placed correctly). In a comparison to the newer XL mo...

The end result is still the same when you boil it down to basics. What is a good thing for one isnt for others. Personal preference. We could see that some people (2 caches in OZ from what we hear) would consider that they wanted to keep their cache listed as exclusive and so they would not want the...

We know of a couple of teams that use the subscriber only for the first couple of finds as a debugging tool. That way they dont have 20 cranky teams emailing them about the faults. It sounds like one of the good uses of that setup. We still cant see many others advantages to us (in a personal manner...

I'd put my money on Ticks. If you went along Kangaroo tracks or brushed past bushes then they hop onto you. They locate exposed areas around cuffs, etc. Sometime we get a row of bites as one has a bit of a field day. The result is small red blisters or lumps about 1mm at the bite and around 10mm red...

The difference in the maps is enough to make you want to have them both. With S and A. The old maps have much better coverage of old unused tracks. the data could be as old as 1960 with updates to about 5 years ago. So you are missing the newer streets and suburbs. They also are individual States as...

I did some experiments and managed to download my Australian Basemap off my Platinum. Its tricky but not impossible. You use hyperterminal and for the 8 meg took about 30 mins. Its the latest version of the map as far as I can tell. If you have a search though e-mule/e-donkey I have noticed that som...

We have an old Garmin45 and a Magellan Platinum. The old Garmin wont die and we are still fond of it even though it can only manage about 10 meter accuracy. found about 80 caches with it over the time and placed lots too. The build quality is better than the Magellan but only slightly. Its hard to p...

I seem to remember that one fo the first caches ever placed was in India by one of the developers of the geocaching idea. Did he get it wrong too ? We will continue to place caches while on holiday as we have always done. The trick is to make double sure that the location you chose will not be found...
