Re: Munzees!

Of the 220+ I have captured to date, 99% take approx 3 secs to capture, Only 1 has proved really akward, It was placed in a dark area and the light feature of the Munzee app was insufficient. I used a headtorch to provide sufficient illumination. Am running Android 4 with a 8 megapixel camera. Unlik...

Re: Munzees!

Like others, I generate a GPX file of the munzees I want, Place that GPX file into a GSAK database, then merge Munzees with my Geocache database. I use different icons to differentiate between Munzees and Caches, Load the lot into my Garmin Dakota 20 and use that to locate Munzees, I only use my pho...

Re: Waterproof pants

Otherwise any rain will drip down your pants, pass under your gaiters, and eventually run into your boots.

Also, when it starts to rain are you going to waste time taking your gaiters off, or just quickly put your pants over the top.

+1 for over

Software problems - Dakota 20

Dakota 20 owners need to be aware that recent software updates - namely Version 2.80, can result in the GPS freezing when you try to save a track. Software version 2.90 was meant to fix the issue, but some owners still report the same problem. http://garmindakota.wikispaces.com/message/view/home/228...

Re: Which GPS Dakota 20 or Oregon 300

4. Electronic compass (2-axis vs 3-axis)
The Dakota 20 is a 3 axis Electronic compass.

The Dakota 20 is smaller than the Oregon 300 and is not suited to in car use.

IMO an ideal handheld GPS.

Re: Garmin compass calibration

Have been using my Dakota 20 for a few months now and love it. In that time I have calibrated the compass 3 times. I have found that when in compass mode the needle will have more swing than in GPS only mode, except when you stand still or move slowly. Once standing still there is almost no movement...

Re: Newbie thread: Which Garmin handheld GPS to buy?

Has anyone tried the Dakota 20? I love my Dakota 20 - in effect a baby Oregon Its smaller size and less screen resolution may put people off but for bushwalking - its ideal. If you want to use it as an in car unit - its too small Meredith likes the 3 axis tilt compensated compass - no more trying t...

Re: GARMIN DAKOTA 20

Just purchased a Dakota 20, My previous GPS was a 2002 Etrex Summit. The Dakota weighs 5gms more than the Summit, and is roughly the same size (not shape) The functionality and mapping is a huge upgrade from the Summit, most impressed. This unit is small and light enough for bushwalking. With GPX fi...

Re: Cache / Hikers log hybrids

I have walked the Gammon ranges for the last 20 yrs and can attest to their beauty and the difficult walking involved. Also I had a cache "A ridge too far" placed in the Gammons for some years. I retrieved that cache due to the drought, but have been told that recent rains have made walking possible...

Re: 1817 Days all alone

A cache doesn't have to be in the middle of a desert to feel all alone. I have a cache WITHIN 200KMS of Melbourne CBD, that has been unfound for 1000 days now :!: :!: :!: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCZ1RW Even my drive by cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.a...

Haven't upgraded yet - waiting for a few months to see if the price falls after the initial clamour to upgrade. I believe that although the 121Mhz beacons are not recognised by satellite, but passing aircraft will still be able to pick up a signal. Useful if in an area like the Vic Alps which is on ...
