Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

First order of business when we arrive, after we check in, is to find groceries and a place to eat Saturday night (presumming we're hungry). Sunday my wife wants to head to the Coal Valley area to visit some wineries. Monday's tenative plan is to head up to Wine Glass Bay. We're trying to avoid down...

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

We fly from Reno, Nevada to Los Angeles, then from Los Angeles to Sydney, Sydney to Melbourne and then Melbourne to Hobart. Between lay overs and air time my wife figured out the travel time is 28 hours.

Next week at this time we'll lose a day. We take off on Thrusday the 18th and arrive on Saturday the 20th. Friday the 19th just dissappears into thin air.

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

Thanks for the info. We now see how things are situated. Looks like there is also a small cluster of caches along the way in New Norfolk. Only nine days to go and we takeoff, not that we're getting excited or anything

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

BTW - for planning we've been using Shonky's full topo maps. For the actual trip I have Garmin's City Navigator maps for Australia. Since it is on a card and not the DVD version we can't use it for planning. Long story short - I found the road to Lake Dobson but I didn't spot Russell Falls or Tarn S...

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

We're not bringing backpacks, just day packs, but we'll be prepared. We're avid hikers and snowshoers spending a lot of time in the backcountry. We live in the high desert of Nevada only a few miles from the Sierra Nevada Mountains where a number of peaks that are over 10,000 feet (with caches). Her...

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

We did get the parks pass. We plan to visit a number of areas but we did eliminate the caches on Brundy Island. At this point we'll be visiting the Coal Valley area, Mt Wellington area, Wine Glass Bay (Freycinet), the Tasman peninsula, the peninsula south of Lauderdale, Mt. Fields and a few other ar...

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

Thanks for the link. That was interesting. It did bring up one other question - are there any toll roads in Tasmania that I should be aware of?

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

Dang - it's snowing again. Sure ready for some warmer weather. In the US you can normally make a right hand turn after stopping at a red light. Can you make a left hand turn after stopping at the red light in Australia? Round-a-bouts, traffic circles, what ever they are called. In the US the autos i...

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

Definitely getting excited. We're from a high desert area in Nevada so we know about water. We'll also have a purifier so we can take water from streams if need be.

Maybe to save a some space I'll just hitch hike around Tas. Is there a hitch hiker's guide I can use?

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

Guess I'll have to use Australian dollars since I don't think I'd be able to get the pelts and wine past customs :D On the serious side, I tend to leave golden US dollar coins in caches when I travel if I make trades. It is surprising how many people in the US don't even know we have a dollar coin b...

Re: Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania

How much is gas in Australia? What would the average fill up be? As far as that goes what are some average prices in Tas such as a container of milk, a pint of beer, a cup of coffee? Are we in for sticker shock?
