Welcoming Committee.
Welcoming Committee.
Expressions of interest.
I would like to propose a welcoming committee. A informal group of people who are regulars here to welcome people as they sign up (via PM) or after their first couple of posts. I know we have people who do that out of the kindness of their heart but I would like to give that sentiment a kick along a bit.
I don't know about your arrival here but for me I found it warm and encouraging and I'd like to think that still occurs. So if anyone would like to help out that would be great.
All you have to do is keep an eye on the arrivals at the bottom of the main page and either PM them a welcome or post after they do extending a warm greeting. Simple but nice.

No cached. Your missing half the conversation that I responded to.
Dooghan suggest perhaps a new category for new members to go into to be welcomed just like the thread for newbies that doesn't get much use. As you can see he has since edited it leading to the confusion.
I was just having a crack at him because some week ago I ran a poll which turned into the Photography category. I then left for a week away and came back to strong debate and a fresh new Off-roading (Swampys Mud Hole) section.
Dooghan suggested another section for the newbies and I was stepping clear before the powers that be considered me a suspect.

I thought of a form and decided against it.
1. it in personal
2. it would feel like spam if two plus people sent the same thing.
I reckon just say Hi in your own way and if you feel the need supply link they might like such as the wiki, newby threads and maybe a run down or current topics or up coming events near them.
Either way it would be nice if we keep that personal flavor that small forums have when someone new arrives.

I didn't get one when I started . We (SNP and I) would have really appreciated it; we were confused about the difference between GCA and GC. In fact, we had a bit of a bad experience, and thought cachers were, well, a little cliquey. It took us quite a while to come 'round to GCA, but now we're here ... . Once we each hit 500, you might even see us at an event!Bronze wrote:I think it's nice. People really do appreciate it I'm sure.

I have so far found the forum etc to be pretty friendly and easy going, the PM idea is a good one as long as it doesn't have that 'auto message' feel about it.
Re: Welcoming Committee.
As a relatively new member, I admit to being frequently bamboozled and confused about not only the forum but caching as well at times. The issue of the need to separately log a find (when you cache as a couple) comes to mind.
I am familiar with the board here (PhpBB) but not with the intricacies of importing finds automatically, for example.
I would love to have had a warmly welcoming message. In fact I initially found the forum a bit cliquey and almost as though new members were not really welcome. I now suspect that impression was wrong
What would be wonderful is a mentor who could be contacted for advice. But I do realise the imposition that would be for such forum items.
