shonkymaps online
The infamous shonkymaps are online at last...

I originally constucted these Garmin topo maps as a hobby project, and found them quite useful for geocaching. A few other SA cachers have also found them useful and word slowly spread beyond SA, up to the point where lately I have been sending out a couple of CDs per week to interested users interstate. And there are a lot of people owing me beer

Apart from buying me a drink at the next event, they're free to use, although the map data copyright is owned and licensed by the federal government (Geoscience Australia).

I don't really have time to offer support, and you download and use the data entirely at your own risk! If it works and the maps are useful then that's good. If it breaks your PC or GPS then I'm sorry, but you've been warned.
At a minimum you'll require a Garmin mapping GPS, a Windows PC with about 400mb free space on your C: drive, and a licensed copy of Garmin Trip&Waypoint Manager (which should have come bundled with your GPS). Oh, and don't forget you'll need the cables to connect the GPS to the PC (not mentioning any names )

Download V3.51 from here

This Topic at GPS Australia contains the shonkymaps readme file with some further information about the maps themselves..., however you'll need an account at gpsaustralia to access the pages

Yeah Im pretty aware of what is available as far as routables. I was just spoiled earlier this year with the fully routable free maps of New Zealand. They are made by a single guy and cover street level for every road on both islands. Spectacular maps...better than those garmin offer. just pipe-dreaming that something like that will pop up for australia.

The roads are based purely on GA data. So when they run next to a railway line you'll find they've been offset. This is done intentionally by GA so that the printed maps come out with the shapes on the correct side of each other.
There is a tiny amount of additional (non GA) data included with the maps, but not roads. Only waterbodies and the Spirit of Tasmania ferry.
Have a look at the other site mentioned in the top post for the full list of topographic features in the maps.
