Map, Editable landmarks and Search - Beta testing [closed]
we've done some more work and are interested in your feedback
maps
we've updated the beta maps at http://geocaching.com.au/map
new features:
- switchable detail: you can turn off the display of non-cache information
- selectable map size: existing size + two larger sizes
- faster: more optimisations behind the scenes
editable landmarks
we now have the ability to update the maps in real-time. so if you see a landmark that isn't right, then you can fix it up for everyone else!
for example: find cache point on the map (just click on the link, and yes, there really is a "cache point"!). once you are on the map, click on "cache point" and you should get a properties screen. try editing it and press save. if you make a mistake, just edit it back to what it was. once you are comfortable with editing points, try fixing up a few points around your area! if all goes well, this will really improve the quality of publicly available maps! remember: this is live data for everyone to share, so please be careful!
search
we've added a new beta search at http://geocaching.com.au/search
new features
- fuzzy searching: you don't need to spell correctly. eg entering "odisee" will still find you "2001:A Geocache Odyssey"
- MultiMop: auto link to MultiMap (renamed to avoid search engines)
- SpeedWay: auto link to to fast, single-gif version of Sydway
- faster searching: separate checkbox for advanced searches
known issues
- map: clicking on caches not enabled yet
- map: clickable areas don't match the text size yet
- search: marvin is not enabled because it's behaving strangely at the moment
all feedback welcome

Hi guys... just had a little play with the new maps and have the following for you:
Looks very good, but it's a little difficult to make a full assessment as some of the links still point back to the old planner... getting the map positioned at the area you want to look at is therefore a little tricky... Normally you would obviously search on a nearby landmark / cache and then click on planner, but you can't do that at the moment...
I still think it would be useful to be able to recentre the map by clicking on a point on the map... I quite like the interface of Multimap which recentres and zooms in every time you click on the map...
Also how about grouping all the navigation controls into a little control panel on the left hand side of the map... this would avoid the need for scrolling in some circumstances...
I updated the place coordinates for Flynns Beach without a problem - seems to work fine...
Thanks for the link to multimop... seems to work fine...

I am still getting the same error when entering text in the Search text box.
On every keypress, including the enter key I get a Runtime error
Line 182:
Error Object expected
It still is not happy with "return submitenter(this, event)"
If I select No for the answer I see the entered letter in the text box.I have also notices that if I select from the drop down box of words I have already entered there is no error message until I press enter.
Still IE 6 running on XP.

error
I'm using WinXPPro and IE6 as well, and wasn't getting any problems... However, when I turn on the "display a notification about every script error", I see the same errors as Riblit & Hounddog when trying to type anything in the search box. the rest of the map functionality seems to work ok though...
My last post refered to the main page. I just found the beta version of the map. It has a different response to searching in coordinates form. For example, I put 'S 26° 45.750 E 152° 03.791' in the search box, and it returns a list of caches from all parts of Australia (from Sydney to WA)!

Is the map server down?
I just tried to access the new map at http://geocaching.com.au/map, and it gave me an error message waying that "You are not logged in. Please log in first."
I most definately am logged into the forum (I'm using it now ) and I used it yesterday. Just wondering if you were doing something to it at the moment, our maybe the server is down, or has the beta testing period expired?
Cheers,
bmac.

thanks, we'll look in to it. the login code checks for a valid session cookie and it could be that you are opening the map in a window that you used for the forum but not recently (we kid you not!) so we will need to change that code to make it more robust. or simply take off the need to log in! (you will still need to log in to edit waypoints, etc)
it works now
I tried reloading the page with shift held in, and that got it to work.

Any chance of adding a link for waypoints to the map on http://topoweb.lpi.nsw.gov.au/ ? I suspect it is a bit tricky to link to. It seems to want lat/long data in order to zoom, so maybe a javascript POST with the appropriate data to the appropriate URL would work.
