Geocaching Article

Post by The Rats » 21 February 05 12:07 pm

Heres an article that appeared in the Illawarra Mercury over the weekend. It makes reference to both the 'au' & 'com' sites which is good :D and for the un-initiated its a fairly informative article. However its dissappointing to see that the article only quotes US cachers.
I'm not sure where they sourced their info from as no local cachers were contacted, but does mention some of the local caches.
The article finishes with no authors name mentioned.
Image

Would be interested to see this one. Have just had a look on the Mercury website, but could find no reference to the article. Even if you could find it there, it appears you may have to pay to view it. (Let's hear it for the Illawarra Mockery!) I'm sending a few emails out to see if I can get a copy scanned in and sent up to me. I still have a few contacts down in the 'Gong...

Its probably an article reproduced from an american newspaper. Well almost certain by all the references to Missouri. The only local content is that url box in the corner..

Isn't the Illawarra Mercury one of the papers that always got mentioned on Media Watch for poor standards of journalism?

They probably ripped the article off a US wire service or online paper - hence the lack of by-line.

There was also an article in one of the sydney sunday papers about geocaching, probably the same article by the sounds of it.

At least the Illawarra Mercury gave the GCA website as well as the US one!

The same article (with different headline and stock photo) appeared on p.27 of The Sun Herald Travel liftout on Sun 20 Feb 2005. Seems the Sun Herald was so lazy, they just lifted the article from where it originally appeared on 3 Jan 2005 on USAtoday.com (http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinat ... hing_x.htm). No local context, stories or links.

BTW, another interesting URl to watch for articles about geocaching is CachingCentral (http://www.levinecentral.com/cachingcentral_wp/).

It appears that our (NSW geocaching anyway) reluctance to talk to the media on prior occassions may have been part of the reason why they would use overseas content. So far for NSW I know we have had at least three occasions to in the last 12months to profile the sport/hobby.

Same article in MX

Post by Quasar » 22 February 05 11:12 pm

The same article - suitably dumbed down and cut to just one column - appeared in today's MX - the free newspaper they give out at city train stations in Melbourne. It was in the "Escape" section - which made it look like an international thing you have to travel to participate in.
