cache updates, owner and watchlist emails [closed]

Post by ideology » 30 January 05 2:20 pm

we have implemented daily owner and watchlist emails for caches listed on gca

we have implemented them as a daily digest rather than as lots of individual emails. the owner and watchlist emails are separate to allow you to quickly see any owner stuff in your inbox.

we sent out a test one this afternoon. from tomorrow they'll be sent out each morning at 8am eastern time

let us know how it goes!

Sounds great! I haven't seen an email but that's probably because I'm not watching anything. I had a brain wave earlier today that I'd like to suggest ...

Watch lists for cachers ... that is, rather than watching caches, one may watch a cacher. So, if I was watching ideology, I'd get a notification for any of their logs, new hides and possibly any logs on their caches.

It would make my stalking that much easier :p

One thing I noticed from the email was there were no dates for logs, I got a long list of logs but I had no idea if they were new finds or old ones (some were very old) - I'm assuming that won't be a problem once they become daily because all logs will be fresh?

mind socket, a stalking list would be fun! naturally the stalkee would be able to see who's stalking them!

horus, correct, we tried to keep it simple by omitting dates. the test email went back a bit over a month (999 hours, to be precise!) to give us plenty of test data. the production emails cover the last 24 hours, so the confusion should be lessened.

we have converted the cache update emails over to a new code base

the reason for doing this is that the same code does cache updates, owner and watchlist emails

the new cache update query is slightly different to the old one: it is based on the state selected in your profile rather than which state usergroup(s) you are in
this should help those queenslanders who haven't been getting any updates!

fingers crossed for tomorrow!

the new cache updates seemed to go out today (yay!)

if you didn't get your cache update, chances are the state in your profile needs to be set, so please have a look at that.

any problems, please let us know

sorry, we didn't realise. it could be because the emails weren't on the regular schedule. we've added a test find to your latest cache and will follow it through to the emails which go out in 20 minutes

cool. the emails are generated by looking at the last 24 hours of activity. when we were testing the thing we didn't run the emails at exactly 24 hour interverals, so perhaps the log was created in one of the windows. we'll keep our eye on it.

We never received a notification of Belken's log on our new cache. But as I read your message I think I understand why ... the activity in the last 24 hrs. Belken's log for the 31st didn't appear till the 2nd because of a username hitch. So if a log isnt posted within 24hrs of the find we dont get a notification. Am I understanding this correctly?<p>

ooh, you're right! that's the problem! we'll change the code to look for logs posted within 24 hours rather than logs dated within 24 hours.

thanks for solving this bug!
