Maps for caching in Japan?

Post by wing6rider » 14 July 17 5:42 pm

We are off to Japan soon and I have been struggling to find suitable maps. I have not found any Garmin maps? But I have found some that are for sale on ebay that are "garmin compatible".

Does anyone have suggestions for which maps I can load for the trip?

Thanks allrounder. I had spotted that site but I was not sure if or how it would work. So, I did a test using downloaded ACT maps and got a good result.

For others, this site provides a very simple explanation of the download process - https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/dow ... 00810.html

I have now downloaded my Japan map zip file and extracted it. I guess I'll find out if it works when I get there! :D

I use http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ both for here and overseas. I have had no problems.

I have used the OSM maps in the USA, Japan, SE Asia, NZ and the Pacific Islands and find that it does everything that you would want on Handheld Garmins and Garmin Nuvi's.

Not really a reply about the maps, but having cached in Japan, be prepared for some really good hides.

That and the caches will take you to a lot of interesting places full of history in most cases.

I suggest reading the cache descriptions fully to help with your searching.

If you are going around August I found the thick cloud cover and the tall buildings a bit of a problem at times in the cities, but areas away from the cities are a bit easier.

I didn't cache in the wilderness as it were. Japan is 70% mountains with forests, so that could be a challenge too.

Enjoy your time in Japan - it is a wonderful place and the people are lovely too.

Thanks for all the advice so far. We leave Monday for just over 2 weeks. And to add more interest to the trip, we are running a meet and greet in Kyoto! So, far we have one attendee!

do you have the GC number for your event? The Japanese geocachers are very active on facebook, and I can make a post letting them know an Aussie cacher is coming to Kyoto for you.
