Post Anybody seen such a trig before?
See http://imgur.com/a/dQKEv for the pictures. S 34 03.925 E 151 02.644 is the coordinates.

On SIX maps this doesn't show up on as being a trig, however on OSM it does show up as such. And further, the road it's called Loftus Trig Trail (but Loftus Ridge Trail on Google Maps and SIX maps).

Personally I think it's more an observation tower (you can see the climbing steps (taken off) and the area to stand in) but they don't match the ones I know from (dutch :-) knowledge.

Anyway, who wants to give their two cents on it?

It's a prop from Star Wars. I can't recall which episode but you can see an observer in the foreground standing in it. I liked the first three (1977 onwards) so probably one of those.

The Star Wars Universe is a great mix-up of obsolete technology and incredible stupidity and these kind of structures are exactly what is proving my point.

What's in the canister at the top of the tower? Looks like the mother of all GPS receivers!

It looked like a metal cover. I threw a stone against it and it jiggled a little bit. I mean if you would throw a stone against it then it should have jiggled a bit.

Ah, who hasn't thrown a rock at an unlisted trig to see if it's real?

I think I'm going to fix the OSM version, the Sutherland Shire maps show it as a fire watch tower.

Wouldn't be a pleasant day up there, not a lot of room to move from the looks of it.

I don't get it neither...

This is how one in the forest near where I lived (.nl) looked like: https://us.123rf.com/450wm/ints/ints150 ... .jpg?ver=6

Definitely a fire tower. On the top (under the cover) will be a compass to get a bearing for triangulating the fire.

But seriously, what is the point of a fire tower in the RNP, on the edge of a city. They could have a chopper over the fire in minutes. Just weird.

Cheers,
Michael.

The bars to climb up are cut off, it's not in use anymore.
Something about a bygone era thingie.

If it is anything to do with surveying I would imagine the box on the top contains a mount for a theodolite. Probably constructed to get a view to other trigs over the trees. Normal trigs would have a point on the ground under the tower to erect a tripod & theodolite.
