Who are "the watchers?"

Post by C.A.S. » 31 March 04 1:36 am

I know this topic has been discussed on the secondary site, but what are Aussie's opinion on finding out who's watching a cache, in particular a cache you own?

We are still new to the "obsession" and have only placed two caches so far (I know ... pretty slack) but I see that one is being watched by 4 and another by 6! Now I'm curious as to who IS watching my caches, not out of paranoia or in fear that it's going to be plundered, by just out of curiosity.

I myself am watching a couple of caches to keep track of who's visits them or if there are any changes made. This is especially helpful if a cache you've tried has been taken offline for repair then you place a watch on it so that you can be notified if there is any change to it's status.

Even though I may be curious who is watching a cache placed by someone else, I can't see the need for me to know exactly who that is.

What are you thoughts?

Over the years, half the fun for us has been trying to guess who will be first to find our caches. Seeing the watchlist grow shows us us that, at the very least, there is interest in the cache. I personaly would rather be kept guessing but perhaps an option, rather similar to the "Whois" command on IRC sites, could be the answer to satisy the very curuous.

Not that I'm insecure or anything, but I would love to know who's watching my caches.

OK I'll fess up...

It's ME! :D

I watch all NSW caches so I can be abreast of what's going on, see how people are finding caches and generally keep in the loop, cache-wise.

So when you all look at your cache pages and wonder "who's watching my cache?" rest assured one of them is the good ol' Loon...

I'll usually watch a cache if:
- I couldn't find it, and am curious as to how others faired
- I thought it was a good/tough/interesting cache and want to know how others go
- It's an upcoming cache or event which I plan on doing
- It's a new "big budget" cache that everyone is hyping over, even if I don't plan on doing it anytime soon.

If it's just your average everyday cache with nothing special about it then I usually don't watch it.

It's not uncommon to have 10 people watching your cache in Sydney, 5 is more the average though I would think.

Bugger... I've just spent the last hour checking and crosschecking my watchlists. I found another 5 or so that I'd somehow missed. Thanks for pointing yours out to me. I think (hope) I'm up to date now...

I think you will find most watchers are those who have found the cache. Of course I may be wrong :) but that is what I do.

I use the watch function to 'note' a cache I may be interested in going to soon. I don't really want the emails and such, it's just a memory tool.

I'd personally like to be able to keep a second list of 'prospective caches' and keep the watch list for those I want to be emailed about.

This cache has been found but the lazy cacher who found it still has not logged it... Bronze?

BTY I think it would be good to be able to make several ad hock cache lists to save on the secondary site.
Am too! :D

Try going to the cache page for Glorious Dead and do a full refresh (Alt+Refresh). You may be surprised...
