GPS error

I have been reporting in a few of my logs and other emails, that I have had trouble in getting within 20 metres of the cache location. Using the Magnetic Compass on my MeriPlat to guide me when I am within 100 metres of the waypoint, I find that the compass swings and varies wildely which totally confuses me.

So today I decided to convert to GPS Compass and using the Course over Ground and Bearing fields I was able to locate a practise waypoint exactly.

I just walked around so that the COG direction matched the Bearing direction and using the distance field I was able to march right upto my placed item.

Is this a technique that others use?

I use the compass screen and have it configured to show EPE (accuracy) and Distance at the top of the screen... Haven't had a problem with this... I use the sun and waypoint indicators to align myself properly with the waypoint I am seeking...

I don't have a Plat myself (only a Meri Yellow), but have heard that the compass can be affected by cars or other large bodies of iron...
