Paypal fraud

Post by riblit » 04 June 03 10:37 am

Just a heads up for anyone with a paypal account.<br>
There is a fraud attempt doing the rounds. It comes as a html letter from PayPal (the address is faked) notifying about recent innovations and asks one to confirm email address, password and credit card details by logging on to the web site.<br>
Needless to say, any info sent is harvested at an intermediate web site before one is redirected to the paypal site.<br> I have received two of these so far. They pointed to different sites but both sites have the same name for the php page the harvests the details and redirects.
I have sent details to PayPal and have received the reply which indicates it hasen't been read by a human as yet.

Yep, I got the same email.
The regular pyramid chain email scam but using PayPal as a front.
Instead of asking you to put money in the mail to X number of people, they ask you to use PayPal instead.
The catcher is that the email has the same subject line as you'd get if someone has paid you money through PayPal. Those that use PayPal will certainly be duped into reading it, and it does take you a few seconds to figure out it's a scam. Looks like the scamers are getting with the times.
The Nigera scam will be next...

<p>
For those of you unfamiliar with the Nigerian 4-1-9 Scam, <a href="http://www.quatloos.com/scams/nigerian. ... ian.htm</a> will give you the low down.
<p>
For a lighter take on the 4-1-9 scams, have a look at what happens when<a href="http://www.quatloos.com/brad-c/musa.htm"> this guy </a> takes on a Nigerian scammer.

Not so Ecoteam - This one asks people with paypal accounts to log in to paypal and has a form for their convienance - only problem is the form redirects through another web site where the login and credit card details are harvested.
it reads<P>

Dear PayPal Customer <p>

This e-mail is the notification of recent innovations taken by PayPal to detect inactive customers and non-functioning mailboxes.<p>

The inactive customers are subject to restriction and removal in the next 3 months.<p>

Please confirm your email address and and Credit Card info number by logging in to your PayPal account using the form below:<p>

Then a form to fill in your details<br>
followed by the normal paypal trailer.

Don't hold your breath for an answer from PayPal, on may 28 I asked them to confirm that it is a hoax, and have only had the automated "we received your question" reply so far.

That's not the one I've seen Riblit, must be more than one doing the rounds.
The one I got asked you to pay a list of people on the email via PayPal and then add your name to the list and pass it one etc, just like the old chain letter scams.
