Trig in NZ

Post by Goldenwattle » 04 November 15 6:52 pm

I was going through some photographs I took on Steward Island a couple of years ago and I found a photograph of a trig. I believe it is at co-ordinates: S 46° 52.680 E 168° 08.930. This is almost beside GC41PGW cache. What is necessary to have another NZ trig added, and does this count as a trig? Someone has photographed the trig on the GC cache site.

I also saw a typical trig in Paeroa, NZ today up on a hill, but that one might not be easily assessable. However the one mentioned on Steward Island is, with a long walk.
ADDED:
I found a NZ trig site and I am not sure about placement of the Steward Island trig now, but the one I saw today up on a hill above Paeroa is mentioned at S37.3636 E175.6834. Beacon_typ 2M and name BOT 3.

If you are confident in the co-ords... list it as a TrigPoint in NZ.

Now, after I found the NZ trig map, link added above in my last entry, I am not so sure I have the correct co-ordinates, so I might give adding the Stewart Island trig a miss. The one I saw above Paeroa today is correct, but I suspect an access problem (private land) with that one, so perhaps that shouldn't be added either.

I've published a few I've found in NZ. No one ever logs them again though so it doesn't feel like it's worthwhile. The Kiwis might have their own site for trig logging? I don't know.

There are quite a few on roadsides - not even in a high position so they are a bit different to ours.

Catch-22.

If there are none listed, then people won't find them. People won't list them because no-one finds them. List them and people will find them. Once people find them they will list them.

I have logged two NZ trigs on this site in the last few days.

Today I found two very obvious "survey marks". No trig 'roof', but I will check them against that trig map link above, and if they are on it I might make entries for them. Or do they need more structure? From memory, the writing looked similar to the two I logged (with trig structure). It just appears the top bit might have gone missing. But I will research them further.

I checked the NZ trig map. Unfortunately the two survey marks I found are not trigs. I will keep looking for trigs while I am here in NZ. As I mentioned, I did see a wonderful trig sticking up off a hill above Paeroa, NZ. Unfortunately I'm not sure how anyone would access that one. That one is on the NZ trig map, so definitely a trig. I photographed it, from the bottom of the hill.

I listed one above Dunedin a couple of years when over for the mega that I found on the mountain above town (hiding under the TV transmitters). Also spotted one on the highway back to Christchurch but saw it too late to stop, just sitting by the side of the road on a little man made cairn on a flat plain. Go figure.

I found a trig \:D/ , not far from the road, headed for Cape Reinga. I took its photograph, got its co-ordinates and patted it. Now all I have to do is add it here. I was thrilled :D !

Now, how do I make a page for this trig?

I generally copy the generic description about what a trig point is from one of the other listings, and then add any local information about the location or the type of trig. If you list it as a trigpoint it should make the owner Geocaching Australia but this has been known not to happen before and it defaults to being yours. Either way apart from that you just list it like you would any other GCA cache.

But where do I do that? That was what I wanted to know.

Eventually I found how to register this trig :P.
Here it is: http://geocaching.com.au/cache/tp7234

There's another possibility I will be passing today, that I will investigate.

We hid one in Bluff... plenty of trigs around to list!

I published one on the shores of Lake Taupo which had a handy plaque with information about what a trig is. I do have a photo somewhere.
