Post National Engineering Landmarks / Historic Engineering Marks
Greetings,

I have (and will continue over the next couple of weeks) entered a bunch of National Engineering Landmarks / Historic Engineers Marks / etc as virtuals.

I will only enter ones for which I have a confirmed coordinate / marker combination, so it could be that I won't be able to get them all.
My main sources are crowdsources from GA3049 and GA2720, the Internet and the Heritage register at the Engineers Australia.

The Heritage register is in an interesting state of confusion as there has been some confusion in it about which are Engineering Heritage National Landmarks and National Engineering Landmarks (spot the difference?) and which are Engineering Heritage Markers and National Engineering Landmarks. In the beginning everything was nicely sequentially numbered and then they stopped numbering them after a certain date. And then I have a list from July this year which does not have the numbers in them at all nor links to the nominations and reports but seems to be most up-to-date with the recent ones. Oh well, that is life.

Happy hunting and let me know if you find one which is not on the list of GA3049 and GA2720 (with coordinates and pictures please :-)

Edwin

Do you have a list of these that, if any of us live near, we can confirm for you?

I appreciate your offer. I will, once the ones I know, are done go through the list and compile a list and provide the URL here.

The Narrows Bridge is one in Perth?

I can post a photo if you wish with coordinates.

Whoops - you have it. Awesome.

The Hay Point No.2 Export Coal Loading Jetty was awarded an Engineering Heritage National Landmark in June 2013.

There is a plaque near the Public Viewing Area, Port Control Centre.

The plaque is inside the dome? Will the GPS work inside the dome? Are the co-ords for the general dome or for the actual plaque?

The plaque is inside the dome, see http://geocaching.com.au/gallery/log/3435753.

I published locationless caches for both of these some time ago:

National:
http://geocaching.com.au/cache/ga2720

Historic:
http://geocaching.com.au/cache/ga3049

You can check the logs on these caches to see which are extant.

I even own a reworked GCA cache (adopted from Riblit) which includes a Historic Engineering Marker on the trail.

Sadly ignored for 151 weeks I'm thinking of taking it to the dark side.

They have been a great source of information already :-)

I have posted the list at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

The links are to the Heritage portal of the Engineers Australia website, but the coordinates they link to are very euhm.
For example this Dam in Oberon goes through their main street: https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/p ... upply-1943

If you want to help by crowdsourcing data, and I greatly appreciate your help... If you have found a marker, make a photo of it so I can read the text, try to obtain the coordinates (GPS or photo) or a general description (street crossings, bridge names) and I'll try to match it against the database.

So far I've managed to match 52 of the 122 of them (and found one which wasn't on their list). This counter is at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

I will also see if the Engineers Australia are interested in obtaining these coordinates for their own interest.

Don't forget to tag your cache listings with something unique. Then people can make a query out of the public tags. That way they can gather all of these type caches togetrher in one downloadable GPX file or list to the screen or something else just as funky.

Tags are a great way to collect similar items together for easier use.

Oh good idea. I'll think of something that will work, most likely "EngineersAustralia" :-)

I have added this one as GA7596. Thanks!
