It feels like I've been aware of geocaching forever but, although intrigued by the idea, I never found myself investing in the requisite gadgetry. Things changed when I finally swapped my dumbphone for a very rudimentary smartphone this year, and my interest was piqued anew by that ABC 7:30 story and a chance Twitter exchange shortly thereafter. So far, I'm getting by with c:geo and modest GPS accuracy, and doing everything alone, but I'm not particularly wedded to this state of affairs. :)

I'm in Melbourne's outer southeast/bay-side suburbs which means the likes of gmj3191, Earthbound Chief and suzuiq are very familiar names already. Indeed, I must have visited dozens of their caches! (Collectively at least, perhaps even individually.) I've found my interest shifting to multis, nightcaches and puzzles over traditional caches as time goes on, and am VERY keen to improve my puzzle-solving skills, as my "you're not ready for this puzzle yet" list, as it were, is frustratingly long. Cheers!
Hi~! WelcomeI I also only really got into geocaching after switching to a smartphone with the ability to GPS and internet. Heh I don't know where I'd be without c:geo, my only wish is if it would show me GCA caches as well.
In regards to improving on puzzles - I've found this GeocachingNSW page to be a massive help.
I have plans to be in Melbourne for the mega-event 14-15 Nov, maybe we'll run into each other there!

SweatshopPoise wrote:And, yes, definitely: direct integration of the GCA database with c:geo would seem to be a positive for all parties.
I can't comment directly on c:geo seeing as I am stuck in the iWorld rather than Android, but it does say that you can import GPX files.

On the iPhone I use geosphere as the app, it allows direct imports from the geocaching.com website of my PQs, but I can also import the GCA GPX files that are emailed to me. Either by downloading from my email program to Geosphere where it asks what database I want to import it to, or I can use a bookmark I have set up in the app to take me to my GCA PQ downloads page.

So while it isn't quite as seamless as downloading the PQs from GC, it still works and very well with just an extra step or two. I suspect c:geo would work in a similar fashion. It probably won't integrate with GCA for the purpose of uploading logs, but I never do that from the phone anyway as I can't be stuffed write a decent log on the small screen and keyboard (getting too old to read it without the glasses combined with fat fingers) - I prefer to log on the PC when I get home and actually write something more. I only ever log on the phone if it is an FTF in which case I do it on the browser screen anyway with a short log that I then update when I get home to a decent keyboard.

Your best bet is probably to go to an event and ask around, or post something in the Software/Hardware solutions forums here. Someone else who uses it should be able to assist.

Hi all. I'm very new to Geocaching (only 6 finds so far). I got into it thanks to my sister's stories about doing it with her family.

I've had lots of fun trying to track down some of my local spots (Shepparton) while on walks with my only problem being that I'll need to start driving somewhere for new starting point (oh, and managing to drop and break my phone a few days ago while searching for a cache. D'oh!)

Welcome Kelshandra, Shep has a couple of active players as does Echuca and Bendigo. There is some terrific caches in the area so enjoy. We are from Bendigo - I'm sure you will be across this way at some stage.

Hi everyone. We team up to go geocaching. Helen lives in Burra SA, and I (Leigh) live 20 kms up the Barrier Hwy. We are involved in the history of this great area, and I am a tour guide for tourist buses that visit Burra. Hope to meet some of you out and about. Helen and Leigh (burramundi)

Hi, all!

I'm a 25 year old guy from Tasmania, currently living in Hobart, who's decided to take up Geocaching as a way to get out of the house and get a bit of fitness. I've never done it before but by all accounts it sounds like fun so I'm looking forward to getting started!
I'm currently studying a Masters of Teaching specialising in high school maths and science. In my free time I like playing saxophone, kayaking, hiking, reading, writing stories and poetry, photography and I love animals.

I can't wait to get to know you all and to get out there and find my first cache!

Gee I can feel all the memories rushing back.
Printing pages and pages of paper, getting to a cache and finding I'm missing the page which had the hint.
Then the upgrade to a PDA which also helped remembering to log all the days finds.
Then the Tom Tom in the car with the pre loaded cache GPX files to help quickly navigate to all the hidden boxes.

I've been hiatus since 2008 but thought the other day that my 3 year old Daughter would love to go on a short bush walk and find a cache,
So downloaded some apps onto todays Smart Phones and off we went. she loved it and I felt like a had never stopped.

However I really missed having that dedicated GPS in my hand so i'll be looking through the house for the old Magellan Explorist 600 and see if it can be brought back to life however I may need to upgrade as I'm probably too impatient now to wait for that GPS loc.

Suprised my logins all still worked and I hadn't been deleted from the books and good to see some familiar names around.
Will be interesting to see who is still active from back in the good old days.

See you out there, possibly a few new GIN51E caches may be created this year with a more kid friendly theme. :D

Hi everyone, nice to meet you! I'm new here. I live in Melbourne's inner North. I recently submitted my PhD thesis, and now I'm trying to find new things to get me out of the house and moving about. I love discovering new places and exploring. I'm also a keen videogamer, and there's nothing I love more than a map full of icons to discover! When I found out that I can do that for real with geocaching, I knew I had found a new hobby \:D/ I also like climbing up things and making stuff. I look forward to eventually making my own cache and climbing up something to hide it :D
