Burke & Wills - Markers / Cairns

Post by caughtatwork » 02 February 10 9:02 am

My google-fu has been weak of late. With the almost infinite resources of the GCA membership I'm looking for help.

I'm trying to find the co-ords of any / all of the official markers / cairns for the Burke & Wills Victorian Exploring Expedition.

I have the kmz file of their trip, but these aren't necessarily marked with a marker / cairn.

Individually I can find two markers. The start marker at Royal Park and the marker at Moonee Ponds. After than I'm running out of luck.

Can you help me to find the lat / lon for any more / all of the markers / cairns for this expedition? I would really appreciate the help.

The Royal Society of Victoria is the oldest learned society in the state of Victoria in Australia.
The Royal Society of Victoria (R.S.V.) was formed in 1859 from a merger between The Philosophical Society of Victoria (inaugural president Captain Andrew Clarke) and The Victorian Institute for the Advancement of Science (inaugural president Justice Sir Redmond Barry), both founded in 1854. The first president of the R.S.V. was Baron Sir Ferdinand von Mueller, then Government botanist. In 1860 the R.S.V. organised the Burke and Wills expedition.

Here on the Pamamaroo Creek is the site of the base camp of the 1860 Burke and Wills expedition. The expedition party included 15 men, 23 horse, 27 camels and 21 tons of stores. At the time of Burke's arrival in Menindee it was an outpost with no other settlements between here and the vast interior. On 19 October the small party of Burke, Wills, Brahe, King, Gray, McDonagh, Patton and Dost Mahomet, 15 horses and 16 camels left the Pamamaroo camp and headed north. The balance of the expedition party stayed for the next year.

The tree at the depot camp that Brahe marked the location of the buried supplies still stands on the banks of Bullah Bullah Waterhole on Coopers Creek in south-west Queensland.
Short Overview: Robert O'Hara Burke had asked Brahe and the depot party to remain at the depôt camp on the Cooper for three months. The depot party actually waited for over four months, but by then they were then running low on supplies and starting to feel the effects of scurvy and they believed Burke would not be returning from the Gulf.
Brahe decided to leave Coopers Creek and return to Menindee, but before he left he buried some provisions in case Burke did return and he carved a message on a tree to mark the spot.

See:

Looks like there are a couple of co-ords posted in this discussion.

Cheers!

That's where I got the kmz file for their trip. I'll check again to see if any of the markers are specifically mentioned in the posts.

Oops - sorry - just realised you are after co-ords for a specific Victorian expedition.

Still may be of interest to place in the database though.

Details now in OP

Check out http://www.burkeandwills.net.au/Memorials/heritage.htm and look on the left hand side of the web page for other links of interest. Even includes KMZ files but not all heritage sites are specific for the actual expedition.

Cheers!

Looking good! Are all/some of these items going to be added to the GCA database? I can see arguments for both sides of this concerning whether they should or should not.

Cheers!
Rob.

I added one last month to the locationless cache at http://geocaching.com.au/cache/ga1298 - do they deserve more than that?

There's a project I'm looking at which may do something with them all.

In my opinion some of these locations would certainly be classed as significant enough to deserve the listing.

Just my 2c worth.

If it's anything like Bill and Ham's Excellent Adventure I'm liking this idea already.

Yes and no.

* Royal Society of Victoria Building commemorative plaque.
* Royal Park memorial cairn. - Got it.
* Moonee Ponds monument and camel sculpture. - Got it.
* Lancefield Camp IV cairn.
* Burke & Wills Track. Barnadown Camp VIII cairn.
* Mount Hope Camp XI cairn.
* Burke & Wills Clump Camp XIV sign & cairn.
* Burke & Wills Tree, Curlewis Street, Swan Hill. Swan Hill Explorers Memorial. - Got it.

That's 5 that I need to find co-ords for so that's a good addition.
