GPSMAP76 - How To Connect To GSAK

Post by anthony.sarah » 20 July 07 7:49 pm

I have a Garmin GPSMAP76.

I have connected it to my PC using the Serial Interface Cable (via USB - Serial adaptor).

I cannot get GSAK to recognise that the unit is connected.

Anyone have any ideas?

possibly a COM port issue, In GPS setup try different COM ports - mine uses COM4 to use usb/serial adaptor

COM12 is my only option, yet when I attempt to retrieve waypoints it says COM1 can't be initialised. Not sure why it's looking for COM1.

Hi look in your control panel / hardware / Com port lpt port list it should come up with what com port it has been assigned mine comes up the last on the list with the comport in brackets you need to then set up GSAK to suit the com port and Gpsr Make unclick the usb button (or click it I cant remember ) but if you have a mapsource product It will tell you which com port when it does a search also remember that only one program can access the GPS at one time as it locks the port so that nothing else will. Hope this helps Ron
Edit it might help if you unplug the adapter then plug it back in so it can get a new com port assigned to it

Two separate issues.

1. Why not use straight USB contection? :D Quicker and easier. For the purposes of the next point I assume you do not have USB connection on your PC.

2. Not all USB/serial convertors are created equal. I have two, a cheap one (~$20) and an expensive one (~$70), 2003 prices.

Guess what. The expensive one always just logs onto to the correct com port. El cheapo has to be manually connected -"Every time"

From memory, 2004 brain cell, you need to go to Manage Devices and assign the correct com port to the USB. Something like that.

Or you could find a better USB/serial convertor.

The GPSMap76 only will connect via its Serial port, no USB.

Must be an older model than the GPSMAP76C sitting alongside me. Say 2002 vintage.

1) Will the GPSr talk to any other programs? (OziExplorer, etc)

2) Are there drivers for your serial to USB convertor?
(There are for the adaptors we use at work. The GPSrs won't work at all otherwise)

Thanks for all your help guys, I tried all your suggestions but lucked out.

I have an old Dell Notebook with a serial port, I plugged the GPS into it and it worked like a charm. I will use the notebook for now and look at buying an PCI card with a serial port for the desktop computer.

Thanks again!

Anthony
