Garmin Maps
Hey all,
I just picked up a cheap secondhand Street Pilot 2610 which unfortunately has a very dated set of V5 maps installed. Is there anyone else on these boards running similar units? It seems rather competent so far...only being let down by the age of the maps. I have looked at Tracks4Australia maps but i believe they are non routable...making them a bit useless for my intended purposes for this unit.
Are there any other alternatives that are cheaper than buying the heinously expensive garmin product? I belive they have an upgrade option but without the orriginal serial details im a bit up the creek I believe the way they run it the CD is free and the unlock code is what you pay for...is there anyone out there that could send me a copy of the CD? I dont belive this is breaking the rules at all...also anyone that has any "extra info" on this could PM me perhaps?
I only want the tasmanian portion of the maps...The rest of the continent is of no interest to me currently.
Cheers all
Joe

It's my understanding that you can not send maps from garmin Mapsource etc to the GPSR unless the unit is registered to that particular copy of mapsource you can register up to 2 GPS R's that can accept maps to mapsource if it does not hold maps it doesn't count. Mapsource 7 is due out this month I think but you can upgrade if you BOUGHT v6 since publishing (Release ) date this only counts for the map data!! as you can upgrade the software online. currently 6.11.3 THe web site will go into it in more detail http://www.garmin.com/

Just looking at the garmin web site, it looks like the new version of city navigator is going to be available this week.
Didnt look like there were many updates, just from looking quickly. the upgrade is $125 for people who qualify, or the usual price for people who have to buy the full set
ill have a better look tomorrow morning (when sober) and figure out wether or not its worth me upgrading

StreetPilot 2610
Hi Aloysius, hope you're enjoying your SP2610. I have a 2610 myself and find it's a great unit. I even used to take it out caching with a backpack for 12v power. I found it very accurate and easy to use. I only use it in the car now as I have moved on to a PDA unit with a CF GPS and OziExplorerCE and VitoNavigator etc. Havent looked back since then as I find this setup is much better than a normal handheld gps unit. Anyway, your v5 maps are pretty damn old, but you already knew that. Get CN7 when it comes out and you'll be right, not much point buying CN6.01 now. The CD's you can get easily enough for free from your local GPS dealer, it's just the code you have to buy from Garmin. Anyway, if you have any questions about your 2610, just ask.
Cheers
Mal

Have got the track4aus maps loaded and viewable on mapsource. They seem much more detailed as far as tracks go compaired to city navigator v6 online viewer.
I have the city navigator v5 CD. I'm trying to get back the user code from garmin as it's lost. It is still owned by the original registered user.
Mapsource warns me that I'm going to erase garmin loaded software on the removable card (not recomended)
Is this a valid point or just sales spin?

I've seen this message a number of times while messing around with new maps I've generated myself. I'm not sure of the exact conditions that cause the message to be generated.>Mapsource warns me that I'm going to erase garmin loaded software on the removable card (not recomended)
I ignored the warning based on the assumption garmin wouldn't put anything really important, or non-recoverable, on a removable card.
My 60cx still functions
