Cheap (read free) electronic map of Melbourne

Post by aussiecoder » 04 February 05 6:52 pm

I've found a java program that accepts data from a GPS and I want to "fiddle" with it.

It needs a background map (that I need to calibrate) to operate the program.

At this point I don't want to spend any money.

Can someone point me to a free map of melbourne (GIF or JPEG) that has some noticable "points" that I can use to calibrate the map to the software ?

It's very much like oziexplorer, but it comes with source code which means I can make changes to see what sort of things are possible with maps, waypoints and GPSes.

thanks

dave

The Victoria Land Channel web site ( http://www.land.vic.gov.au/ ) might be able to get you started. If you zoom in enough this has quite detailed maps of Melbourne.

If you use MapRequest ( http://maprequest.sourceforge.net/ - a shameless plug, I know) you can build up a larger map and save it as JPG or PNG. MapRequest can talk to the Land Channel site (among others) and can save an OziExplorer .map calibration file along with the image, or you can just copy the coordinates of the corners from the screen.

Note that the Land Channel map uses the VICGRID projection (the GDA version). You might want to check that your program supports this projection.

I've used the land channel maps before - I hadn't thought of them. And I've seen your program too, but had forgotten it - you posting has jogged my memory.

The PMs I received this should have me covered for my initial testing.

thanks (to all)
