I have an old yellow eTrex which needs a serial connection, I have a Serial to USB cable but it won't connect, any ideas?

Hi. I once had a serial cable plus serial->USB adapter cable, to connect an old Garmin to a laptop. The laptop needed an appropriate driver installed to make the adapter work. From memory RS232 was the one used. Good luck.

Some USB<>serial convertors are not 100% compliant. I have two of them for radio equipment and one works with both serial devices, the other only with one. I would have to look it up but it has to do with the chipset that's used. Some chipsets won't work with any radio's serial port.
It may be the same for GPS units.

The driver might need to be configured to set the adapter to the serial port number which the software is talking to.
I had to do this to get my solar inverter connected to the interrogating software on my laptop.
