Garmin GPS Units Freezing or Turning Off?

Discussion about software such as GSAK, OziExplorer etc, as well as all things hardware, GPSrs, laptops, PDAs, paperless caching, cables etc

Garmin GPS Units Freezing or Turning Off?

Post by ian-and-penny » 02 April 15 9:42 am

Hi, does your Garmin GPS freeze or turn itself off for no apparent reason?

It's quite possible that some unwanted HTML characters (particularly <!-- ) are getting through into the logs being imported.
See some details here.

If you use GSAK, update to Version 8.5.1 Patch 28 and then do a Database > Repair/Defrag it "should" fix the problem.
(Don't forget you must have installed 8.5.0 Build 0 first).

So was that the cause behind your other post about the Montana being unreliable?

What an odd bug!

It might not be the complete cause of everyone's Montana freezing, but it's a step in the right direction.

Here at the Mega a lot of Garmin users were ready to toss their units away. Once I got talking to people I realised I wasn't alone!!

My Montana turns off routinely. Seems that there is only so many operations it can handle in a row. About 200 is my guess. When you hit this limit it switches off and a turn on resets what ever memory limit has been smashed. On a big day of caching this can happen enough times to be annoying.
You can check the last error logs with the instructions from this page http://garminmontanagpsr.wikispaces.com/Diagnostic
Error Logs:
Enter the Trip Computer application (Portrait screen orientation)
Press and hold the lower right corner of the screen (over the Menu Bar) > 5 seconds
A diagnostic screen will appear displaying a list of recently logged exceptions
The lower section of the page will display current memory usage and stats
Select an exception from the list to view register dumps for that exception
Use the back arrow to return to the list of exceptions and to exit this diagnostic mode

Let me know if this is helpful

Thanks Monty,

the procedure is easy, the results mean nothing to me though.

I have downgraded the firmware this morning, I will see how that works.

Just reading this thread, my 600t does the same thing, it must be a new feature!

Did the firmware upgrade make any difference Ian?
