Australian Map Grid Conversion
I have a map which only uses Australian Map Grid (AMG) numbers.
Can anyone tell me how I can convert these to a more useable datum like WGS84?
Then I wish to callibrate it in OziExplorer.

Re: Australian Map Grid Conversion
Ozi can do all that for you. Calibrate your map in AMG, then you can either display the map in Ozi as AMG or as WGS84. Either way, you can separately enter your waypoints as WGS84 and they will plot correctly.Posspet Boys wrote:I have a map which only uses Australian Map Grid (AMG) numbers.

Is there a way to do conversions of this sort manualy (without computer or GPSr)? This has been somthing I have wondered about for some months now after making a discovery I havn't fully sused out. I suspect that it is not just a matter of adding or multiplying by X. Are different grid systems warped in different ways to fit the curve of the earth?I have a map which only uses Australian Map Grid (AMG) numbers.

read about it at http://www.ga.gov.au/nmd/geodesy/datums/amg.jspPosspet Boys wrote:I don't seem to be able to find any reference to AMG in the OziExplorer program.
Am I required to do some sort of manual setup or is there another way?
Is AMG called some other name?

When you go to calibrate your map image in Ozi, (File/Load and Calibrate Map Image), the map will load with a panel on the right where you carry out the calibration. On the Setup tab, you will be able to select the map datum. For AMG, you will need to choose either Australian Geodetic 1966 or Australian Geodetic 1984, depending on the map you are calibrating. There is good info on calibrating maps and on datums in Ozi help.Posspet Boys wrote:I don't seem to be able to find any reference to AMG in the OziExplorer program. If you want an easy way to translate from AGD66 to WGS84 and back again using UTM co-ordinates directly on your map, try going here: http://www.aussievrs.com/geocaching/ and looking at the transcoder details.
