In my original post I stated I wanted to use then for car to car communication so how longa bita string would I need to do this

Ah, the ol' how long is a piece of string conundrum. I'd say it needs to be at least long enough to go between the 2 cars, with a bit extra for knots at each end.

Don't forget to allow enough string for hairpin bends and such.
Actually, if you upgrade from string to 3 ply rope you will getter better bandwidth. Then you could send faxes to one another.

String works better for comms when it's wet.
As a bonus you can even get RS232 comms between units, handy for transfer of waypoints between cars
