Victoria interactive map

Post by EcoTeam » 15 September 04 6:01 pm

Someone just pointed me to this nice interactive map of Vic
http://services.land.vic.gov.au/landcha ... ractivemap
Looks very detailed and even gives you UTM and Lat/Long of the mouse cursor on the map.

Anyone know if there is one for NSW?

Sites like these are worthy of a link on the "tools" page on gc.com.au perhaps?
I'm always forgetting links like this when people ask me!

See the Lands department's "Geospatial Portal"? (formerly the NSW LPI's "topoweb")

Does anyone know of a way of submitting co-ords as part of a URL to this site so that we can directly link to it from a program such as GASK or the GC.com.au website?

It is also possible to purchase 1:30000 Vicmaps GDA94, A4 colour topographic for $1.50 each on the internet.

http://land.vic.gov.au/land/lcnlc2.nsf/ ... +Page?open

and follow the links to purchase.
Maps are downloaded in PDF but if you use Ghostview software

http://www.gnu.org/software/ghostview/ghostview.html

you can convert them to JPG and it takes about 1 min to calibrate each map for OziE.
Convert them to OZF2 format and download them to your PDA

Very handy for areas not covered by your other maps.

Both sites use similar software on the server. Requesting a map is not quite as simple as a simple link, as it requires you to POST proerly formatted XML indicating what information you want. I am taking a look at finding a way to request a map for a particular area, but this might take me a while. (My 1 yr old is wandering the room occasionally reaching for the power button on my PC that is conveniently lit up to show him where to press...)

The map units that the Victorian site seems to use are "Vicgrid 94". Any idea what this is?

e.g. Victoria goes from 2092949,2854753 to 2956218,2234094 using Vicgrid 94 co-ordinages, which seems to be roughly 140.6,-33.9 to 150.1,-39.2 degrees.
