Online Record Attempt

Post by Sol de Lune » 06 September 17 10:34 am

Back on 10 August 2009, the Geocaching Australia Forums held an event where our goal was to have as many cachers online as possible at the same time. As it turned out, 123 of our members managed to be a part of that fun event, and that record of 123 still stands today….8 years later. (For those who aren’t aware, if you look down the bottom of the main page of our forums under ‘Who is online’ you’ll see the details of that night.)

The volunteers here at Geocaching Australia think it’s time we attempted this record again……and hopefully smash that record number of 123.

The attempt will also act a Q&A session for those members who might like to ask one of the volunteers a question or two. As you can imagine with more than 123 cachers online at any one time, answering every question that may be asked could get difficult. If we can’t answer a question during the event, we will post some replies after the event has concluded, meaning members will be always be able to check back later to find their answer. Of course, we do hope to answer any questions during the event.

The details of the event are:

Date
Wednesday 27 Sep 17

Time
8.30pm – 9.00pm for QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS & ACT members
8.00pm – 8.30pm for SA & NT members
6.30pm – 7.00pm for WA members

For those cachers who are not yet members of Geocaching Australia, you will need to register your membership online no later than Monday 25 Sep 17 to allow time for your registration to be approved. This process will not take you long, however it will allow us the time to ensure everyone is approved before the record attempt starts.

As for your requirements on the night to ensure you are included in this attempt, you must be online on the Geocaching Australia Forums between the times listed for your state….and stay online for the entire 30 minutes. You will need to go to the forum topic that we set up (details of this will be posted closer to the time) and post the simple comment…..I’m here. This post will automatically show your cacher name and we’ll know you’re online. REMEMBER though, you must stay online in forums for the duration…..so the full 30 minutes. This is required as some members might not be able to log on til 15 minutes into the record attempt…. but if someone logs on at 1 minute past the start time and then logs off straight away…..we don’t capture everyone as being online at the same time.

For those who also want a ’smiley’ for attending, you can then head over to an event page that we’ll publish and log an ‘Attended’ log. The details for this Event will be published shortly.

As a bonus for dragonZone players, there will be a Limited Trophy (100 points) that will be available for you to claim after the event has concluded. Simply go into your dragonZone trophy page for the Limited Trophy to update.

No doubt there may be some questions before we even get to the record attempt, if so, please ask here and we’ll answer them for you.

I'm probably going to be that late person. I'm operating a camera at a conference meeting that night and will have to wait till its over, find a corner to hide in and jump on my mobile phone.

I was one of those at the last one so it only stands to reason that I will be there for this one.

Hi all,

Below is a link to the virtual event that everyone will be able to claim a find on once the online record attempt has been completed.

You can log a 'Will Attend' from now, however for obviously reasons you can't log an 'Attend' on it until the after the actual record attempt on 27th September.

The details for the forum thread that you will need to visit on the night will be posted next week.

Any questions, please ask away.

Just curious. Why isn't this event being promoted in the daily email?

Hi Whitewebbs,

This is the message you should be seeing:

Keep the evening of Wednesday 27th September free as there will be a Limited Trophy and 100 dZ points up for grabs.

All you have to do to claim this Limited Trophy is be logged in to the Geocaching Australia forum for a specific time period and help us reach a new online record for number of users logged in.

You will also need to log an attended log on this virtual event cache.

Read all the details in this forum post.

Don't forget to check in on your dZ trophy page to claim your prize, otherwise you'll miss out!

------------------

This was to be included in the daily e-mail from 16th - 27th Sep as a reminder. With the current bigpond issue I haven't seen the daily e-mail for a few days.

Have you seen the above notice in the your daily e-mail over the last few days??

I have seen that message or something similar on the dragon zone page when getting daily dz points.
The daily email I have been receiving through a gmail account does not show Wed 27th as an upcoming event.

The Daily e-mail notice has been set up.

This will now give us the 3 days before the record attempt to ensure all who receive the e-mail a chance to be involved.

Thanks Whitewebbs....
