Post Welcome to the Australian Lighthouse series
Greetings,

Over the last month I've entered the description and locations of 170 lighthouses in the Australian landscape. You can find them in a list (http://geocaching.com.au/my/query/screen/8073) or in a map (http://geocaching.com.au/my/query/gmap/8073).

The sources of information were Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_l ... _Australia) and Lighthouses.org.au (http://www.lighthouses.org.au/lights/States/states.asp). I do think I got all of them, if there are missing please do add them or tell me about it and I'll add them.

Lots of things were learned, like the way the patterns get written (Fl. 3. W 15s), the differences in build styles, that for some the whole building (in pieces) got moved from England to here or from Melbourne to the north of NT, that for some places they put in a railroad track towards a beach three kilometers away to get the building materials up etc. Every cache has a link towards a page with more information about it, engorge yourself in the history of them!

Happy hunting, I'm going to log mine on December 1st :-)

(If you want to have your own query, use the tags "lighthouses tasmania, lighthouses northern territory, lighthouses new south wales, lighthouses victoria, lighthouses queensland, lighthouses south australia, lighthouses western australia" to differentiate between the states)

Edwin

Thanks for listing them.

We logged our closest to home a couple of weeks ago, and look forward to visiting a few others over the coming months. There are at least six others that we have visited over the years for regular geocaching, and most of them we would have taken photos, but we will revisit them to log our virtual finds.

Are these only active lighthouses or do they include inactive lighthouse installations?

Most of them are active.

But there are a couple which have been relocated, inactive and one which is a pile of rubble.

But you have a pub. A lighthouse pub. Well a pub call the lighthouse pub.

I checked the link and it seems we do, but I hadn't heard of it before. I don't get to that part of Canberra often...except to geocache. And when I do, I am much more a cafe person than a pub person.

Still, not a real lighthouse. :)

Yes, thanks for these. I dropped past 3 on the weekend, 2 at Beacon Cover and 1 at Williamstown, but also failed on this one. http://geocaching.com.au/cache/ga8641
My logs to come through today sometime.

Luckily I was heading 350km to Smoky Cape to attend a wedding at the lighthouse. Couldn't miss picking up 3 caches at once. A GC puzzle, Trig Point and a lighthouse.

Damn! We visited several lighthouses on our recent trip to Vic but these new arrivals weren't on our radar. Got up close & personal. Inside & up top at Cape Otway. Even took pics of some of them - but without the requisite bod / tech gizmo included of course as they tend to ruin a decent photo. I can feel a revisit trip in the wind.
Now we can add every lighthouse in Aust along with every historic engineering marker & of course every trig point to a "must take photo holding GPS" list. It's getting rather long...

The old Port Germein lighthouse should still be on display at:

S33° 01.415
E137° 59.911

It is no longer active, and was at one stage stored on the wharf at Port Pirie. It is back in Port Germein these days, but at the wrong end of the jetty. More info can be seen here, here and here.

It would be nice to see this rusty old piece of history listed in the series. =D>
