Upcoming Server Outages
Over the next week or so I'll be turning stuff off on the old server to perform backups and dump configurations etc preparing the new server.
Due to no longer being able to stay up till the small hours to wait until things are quiet this may now occur anytime without notice. (I am doing this whenever I find a few minutes available)
If you connect and find the website is not responding, or is timing out then that is probably why.
At most it should be less than 10 minute intervals of outage.
Thanks for your patience.

A little bit of pain for a very big gain. Bring it on. Thanks for all your efforts and hard work.

Re: Upcoming Server Outages
Looking forward to the end result. I can live with the inconvenience (being one of the most regular users of the system).

Re: Upcoming Server Outages
Thanks for the warning CraigRat. Like others small inconveniences are by far outweighed by the final advantages. Looking forward to the updated system.

Tonight will be the worst of it for a while <touch wood>
Copying LOTS of files from the old to the new and it's really hurting the old girl.
Your patience is appreciated.

Re: Upcoming Server Outages
Will the old girl be kept as backup/off site storage or other reasons that I probably can't imagine?

Re: Upcoming Server Outages
Probably not. We pay about $1600 a year for the rackspace, hosting, etc, so we will be replacing old with new at cut over to avoid any unnecessary costs. The DB will be backed up off host so in the event something goes catastrophically wrong, we will be able to recover to before we did the cut over. Once the new girl is up and running, the old one will be sold for scrap and there is no going back.

A new movable cache perhaps?
Re: Upcoming Server Outages
You could send it to Servers' Paradise.

Actually I like that idea. The device itself is way too big and heavy, but I could pull parts from it and have multiple moveables from the old machine.Laighside Legends wrote:A new movable cache perhaps?

That would be really cool to find and move a 'piece' of GCA historycaughtatwork wrote:Actually I like that idea. The device itself is way too big and heavy, but I could pull parts from it and have multiple moveables from the old machine.Laighside Legends wrote:A new movable cache perhaps?
