mobile geocaching australia restarted [closed]

Post by ideology » 28 August 05 11:15 am

on the old server we had a pared-down site designed to be used on mobile devices
we have ported the code across to the new server and hopefully it's working again

the url is http://mobile.geocaching.com.au

please test it out from your mobile phone or pocket pc and let us know how it goes

nb: this is HTML, not WAP, so it's only useable on phones which support HTML

Sorry to bring this up again, I know it's in the works, but the first thing I tried was plugging in the local postcode...
Location searches don't work so well either, a search for Sydney brings up all the caches with the word Sydney in them, 7 out of the 10 are archived, and 2 are in WA!
So to use mobile.geocaching.com.au you need to know the name of the cache you're looking for, before you can find it. I don't think you intended for use of this resource to require forward planning, ie a list of the names of all the caches in an area ;)

this release was simply to port over the old functionality to the new server and database. we would like to test and bed down the existing functionality before creating any new functionality

we are aware of the postcode issue and it is on the development list at http://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/Geoc ... pment_List

so could someone please test this on their pocketpc or mobile phone to see how it goes? thanks!

I could see the site no worries on my 3 mobile and I can see how it would be most helpful at times, but the postcode search revealed nothing - in the inner-suburbs of brisbane???

Cheers,
Diz

thanks crido, glad to hear that it's working

regarding postcode search: there is no postcode search at the moment. it is yet to be developed.

appears to work OK at higher level, but is sporadic at a more detailed level.

<P>Eg: search for 2900 (Tuggeranong) returns caches in the area across several suburbs, but search for 2906 (specific suburbs of Gordon/Conder) returns "invalid search" message - I assume this is when there are no entries. This may be the way caches are mapped to postcode in the DB rather than an error with the search itself.

<P>yet another reason to use the GCA and GCA mobile site ;-)

Hooray! :D
Though a postcode search for Campbelltown, 2560, reports
Near Blair Athol (which is quite correct) and then lists caches from Gunnedah to Moree...
The next postcode to the north, 2566 works great :) Lists all the local caches.
